'The news of Lord Kitchener's death reached us while we were at Hinges. Someone walked into our billet and said they had just heard Kitchener was dead. "Another rumour", I remarked rather scornfully and asked who had told him ... Most of us were rather sceptical and hesitated to believe the report, but it happened that I crossed the bridge that evening and sitting over a café in the estaminet when I saw a copy of Le Matin, in which journal the news was authoritatively announced.'
