‘See … p. 54 "Sphere" for a good peep at Swinburne. Dam disgusting, excuse me … Have you seen Arnold Bennett’s "Pretty Lady". Fortunately I just secured my copy before circulation was prohibited [WO is incorrect here: several bookshops simply refused to stock it after complaints from the Roman Catholic Church]. The book is one which the century needs, as much as the Victorians needed Oliver Twist. As an amusing narrative it is unsurpassed, in spite of its being a collection of pieced-together idylls. If you can’t get it I shall send you my copy.’
