'Shrapnel and pieces of shell were falling all about us and we expected every minute to be our last ... It was a rotten half hour ... During this bombardment a London Telegram was handed round. It stated that about forty thousand Welsh miners were on strike for more pay. They all ought to be hung. Fancy them out on strike while their countrymen are enduring what we were having at that moment, and it was all for their sake as well as our own. The irony of it struck us all.'
