Reading Experience:

Evidence:

'Do you think Stephen will be home for Christmas? His story in B. ["Blackwood's Magazine"] is magnificent. It is the very best thing he has done since "The Red Badge [of Courage]"--and it has even something the "Red Badge" has not--or not so much of. He is maturing. He is expanding.' [Then follows six more lines of praise.]

Additional Comments:

Date range of reading experience unclear but the comment to Cora Crane in the letter, that two other house guests 'last week' were delighted with this short story. places it between late November when the December issue of Blackwood's magazine would have appeared, to early December. See also letters to R.B Cunninghame Graham 1st December 1898 and A.E. Bontine 4th December 1898 pp.124-126 of source text.
